North varieties of blueberry plants

What are half-high blueberry plants?

Half-high blueberry plants, also known as half-high blueberries, half-high varieties, lowbush-highbush hybrids, or simply the 'North' varieties . They form a unique group that originated from crosses between the high (Highbush) and low (Lowbush) blueberry. These plants combine the best of both worlds: the compact growth and extreme winter hardiness of lowbush varieties, with the fruit quality and productivity of highbush varieties.

Half-high varieties remain shorter (usually 40–90 cm), grow wide and bushy, and are therefore ideal for regions with cold winters, for growing in pots or smaller gardens, or for plots where traditional highbush varieties perform less well.

At Schrijnwerkers Plants, we select semi-high blueberry plants that produce reliably in a variety of climate zones. Thanks to their strong winter hardiness, sweet berries, and low-maintenance growth, these varieties are popular with both professional growers and hobby gardeners.

With our range of semi-high varieties—including Northblue, Northcountry, and Northsky—you can choose compact, robust plants that produce delicious berries year after year, even in challenging conditions.
